The Miching community in Assam celebrates a special festival called ‘Ali-i-Lrigang.’ This festival is all about farming and agriculture. It’s similar to the Bihu festival, which is also celebrated in Assam.

The Miching people have been celebrating this festival for a long time, even before they started farming in Upper Assam. The festival has changed over the years and is now what we see today.

In their language, ‘Ali’ means seeds and grains, ‘I’ means fruit, and ‘Lrigang’ means the beginning. So, this festival marks the start of the planting season for them. Farming is very important in their culture, so they celebrate this festival to ask for a good harvest and have fun.

The Ali Ai Ligang festival lasts for about five days. On the first day, they plant crops at home and offer homemade wine to the gods. They also perform a special dance called ‘Gumraag’ with traditional musical instruments.

During these five days, young people go from house to house, dancing and collecting rice and paddy. Some areas celebrate this festival for only three days.

They also have some rules during the festival. They don’t cut down trees, catch fish, or do other work. This is called ‘madnam.’ On the last day of the festival, they have a big meal together.

The Ali-Ai-Ligang festival is not just about farming; it’s a significant part of the Miching people’s culture. It includes songs, traditional clothes, music, food, and beliefs that make their culture unique. 0 0 0.
