Shirin was born on June 21, 1947, in Iran. She became Iran’s first female judge in 1969 but was dismissed from the judiciary after the Islamic Revolution in 1979 due to her gender. Undeterred, she continued to advocate for human rights and legal reform.
She established the Defenders of Human Rights Center in Iran, working on cases related to human rights violations and advocating for the rights of women, children, and political prisoners. Her work faced challenges and resistance from the Iranian government, leading to her arrest and persecution.
In 2003, she was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for promoting human rights and democracy in Iran. However, she continued to face threats and had to leave Iran temporarily due to safety concerns.
