Surah 9: At-Tawbah (The Repentance)

Introduction

Surah At-Tawbah, also known as “The Repentance”, is the 9th chapter of the Holy Qur’an and contains 129 verses. It was revealed in Medina, primarily after the Battle of Tabuk, and is one of the last major surahs to be revealed. This surah is unique in that it does not begin with the Bismillah (“In the Name of Allah, the Most Merciful, the Most Compassionate”), which signifies its stern tone and theme of divine judgment.

The surah deals extensively with themes of hypocrisy, repentance, loyalty, and the responsibilities of the Muslim community, especially in the context of treaties and warfare. It exposes the hypocrites within the Muslim ranks, warns those who break covenants, and calls for sincere repentance (Tawbah) from those who have erred.

At-Tawbah emphasizes that true believers are those who support the Prophet Muhammad (S) in both times of ease and hardship, and it clearly distinguishes between the faithful and the hypocrites. It also outlines the importance of upholding truth, being loyal to divine commands, and defending justice.

This surah serves as both a warning and a call for purification—of intentions, actions, and community bonds—reminding Muslims that Allah’s mercy is vast for those who truly repent and reform.

Surah 9: At-Tawbah (The Repentance): Text

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

1. This is a declaration from Allah and His Messenger: We are no longer bound by any agreement with the polytheists who broke their treaties.

2. You are given four months to travel freely in the land, but know that you cannot escape Allah, and that He will disgrace those who reject Him.

3. On the Day of the Great Pilgrimage, Allah and His Messenger announce to the people: Allah and His Messenger are free from any commitment to the disbelievers. If you repent, it will be better for you. But if you turn away, know that you cannot escape Allah’s power.

4. Those among the polytheists with whom you made a treaty—and they have not broken it or helped others against you—keep your agreement with them until the term ends. Allah loves those who keep their word.

5. When the four sacred months are over, fight the polytheists wherever you find them, capture them, surround them, and wait for them at every point. But if they repent, establish prayer, and give zakat (charity), let them go. Allah is Forgiving and Merciful.

6. If any of the polytheists asks for your protection, give it to them so they can hear Allah’s message. Then take them to a place of safety. This is because they do not understand.

7. How can there be a treaty with the polytheists—except with those who are near the Sacred Mosque and have remained true to their pact? As long as they are faithful, be faithful to them. Allah loves those who are mindful.

8. How can a treaty be trusted with others? If they gain power over you, they will not honor family ties or agreements. They flatter you with words, but their hearts are against you. Most of them are rebellious.

9. They sold Allah’s message for a cheap price and turned people away from His path. What they’ve done is terrible.

10. They respect neither ties of kinship nor agreements with believers. They are the ones who truly go beyond all bounds.

11. But if they repent, perform the prayers, and give the zakat (charity), then they are your brothers in faith. We explain Our signs clearly to people who understand.

12. But if they break their promises after making an agreement, and attack your religion, then fight the leaders of disbelief—they have no respect for oaths—so that they might stop.

13. Will you not fight those who broke their oaths, tried to drive out the Messenger, and attacked you first? Do you fear them? It is Allah you should fear, if you are true believers.

14. Fight them! Allah will punish them through your hands, disgrace them, help you win over them, and heal the hearts of the believers.

15. He will remove the anger in their hearts. Allah accepts the repentance of whom He wills. Allah is All-Knowing, All-Wise.

16. Do you think you will be left untested without Allah seeing who among you truly strives for His cause and does not take anyone—other than Allah, His Messenger, and the believers—as allies? Allah is fully aware of everything you do.

17. It is not right for the polytheists to maintain Allah’s mosques while they declare disbelief in Him. Their deeds are worthless, and they will remain in the Fire forever.

18. The ones who should maintain Allah’s mosques are those who believe in Allah and the Last Day, establish prayer, give zakat, and fear no one but Allah. It is expected that these will be rightly guided.

19. Do you think that giving water to pilgrims and maintaining the Sacred Mosque is equal to believing in Allah and the Last Day and striving in His path? They are not equal in Allah’s eyes. Allah does not guide the wrongdoers.

20. Those who believe, leave their homes for Allah’s cause, and strive with their wealth and lives are of the highest rank in Allah’s sight. They are the successful ones.

21. Their Lord gives them good news of His mercy, pleasure, and gardens where they will live forever—blessings that are truly great.

22. They will live there forever. Truly, with Allah is a great reward.

23. O believers! Do not take your fathers or your brothers as close allies if they prefer disbelief over faith. Whoever does that is truly doing wrong.

24. Say: If your fathers, sons, brothers, wives, families, wealth you earned, trade you fear might fall, or homes you love—if any of these are dearer to you than Allah, His Messenger, and striving in His cause—then wait until Allah brings His decision. Allah does not guide the rebellious.

25. Allah helped you in many places, and on the day of Hunayn, even though your large numbers amazed you, they didn’t help. The earth, despite its vastness, felt tight around you, and you turned and fled.

26. Then Allah sent down His peace upon His Messenger and the believers. He sent down invisible armies and punished the disbelievers. That’s what they deserved.

27. Then after that, Allah accepts the repentance of whomever He wills. Allah is Forgiving and Merciful.

28. O believers! The polytheists are impure, so do not let them come near the Sacred Mosque after this year. If you fear poverty, Allah will enrich you out of His grace if He wills. Allah is All-Knowing, All-Wise.

29. Fight those who do not believe in Allah or the Last Day, and who do not consider forbidden what Allah and His Messenger have forbidden, and who do not follow the religion of truth—even if they are from the People of the Book—until they pay the tax (jizyah) with humility and submission.

30. The Jews say, “Ezra (Uzayr) is the son of Allah,” and the Christians say, “The Messiah is the son of Allah.” These are just words from their mouths, imitating the sayings of those who disbelieved before them. May Allah destroy them—how far they have gone astray!

31. They (the Jews and Christians) took their rabbis and monks as lords besides Allah—and they also took the Messiah, son of Mary—as lord. But they were only commanded to worship one God; there is no god except Him. He is far above the partners they associate with Him.

32. They want to put out the light of Allah with their mouths, but Allah will complete His light, even if the disbelievers hate it.

33. It is He who sent His Messenger with guidance and the true religion to make it rise above all other religions—even if the polytheists dislike it.

34. O believers! Many rabbis and monks consume people’s wealth unfairly and prevent others from the path of Allah. Warn those who hoard gold and silver and do not spend it in Allah’s cause: a painful punishment is coming for them.

35. On the Day it is heated in the Fire of Hell and used to brand their foreheads, sides, and backs, they will be told: “This is what you hoarded for yourselves, so taste what you hoarded!”

36. The number of months in Allah’s record is twelve—from the day He created the heavens and the earth. Four of these are sacred. That is the true religion. So do not wrong yourselves during them. And fight the polytheists all together as they fight you all together. And know that Allah is with those who are mindful of Him.

37. Postponing the sacred months is an increase in disbelief. The disbelievers are led astray by it. They make certain months sacred one year and non-sacred another year, just to match their own desires and violate what Allah has made sacred. Their evil actions are made to look good to them. But Allah does not guide the disbelievers.

38. O believers! What is the matter with you? When you are told, “March forth in the cause of Allah,” you cling heavily to the ground. Are you happier with the life of this world than the Hereafter? The pleasures of this world are tiny compared to the Hereafter.

39. If you do not go out and strive, Allah will punish you severely, replace you with another people, and you cannot harm Him in the least. Allah has power over everything.

40. If you don’t help the Prophet, Allah already helped him when the disbelievers forced him out. He was one of two in the cave. He said to his companion, “Do not worry—Allah is with us.” Then Allah sent down His calm upon him, supported him with armies you could not see, and made the word of the disbelievers the lowest. But the word of Allah is always supreme. Allah is Almighty and Wise.

41. Go out—whether light or heavy (able or struggling)—and strive with your wealth and lives in the cause of Allah. That is better for you, if only you knew.

42. If the gain had been easy and the journey short, they would have followed you. But the distance was too much for them. Still, they will swear by Allah, “If we could, we would have joined you.” They destroy themselves—Allah knows they are lying.

43. May Allah pardon you (O Prophet)! Why did you let them stay behind before it was clear who was truthful and who was lying?

44. Those who truly believe in Allah and the Last Day will not ask to stay behind when striving with their wealth and lives is required. Allah knows those who are mindful of Him.

45. Only those ask for permission to stay behind who do not truly believe in Allah and the Last Day and whose hearts are full of doubt. They are always hesitating.

46. If they had really wanted to go out, they would have made preparations. But Allah disliked their going, so He held them back and told them, “Stay with those who stay behind.”

47. Had they gone with you, they would only have caused trouble and tried to spread confusion among you—some among you would have listened to them. Allah knows the wrongdoers.

48. They have already tried to cause division before and turned things upside down for you—until the truth came and Allah’s command was fulfilled, even though they disliked it.

49. Among them is one who says, “Let me stay behind and don’t test me.” But they have already fallen into temptation. Hell surrounds the disbelievers.

50. If something good happens to you, it upsets them. But if disaster strikes you, they say, “We planned ahead,” and they turn away happily.

51. Say: “Nothing will ever happen to us except what Allah has written for us. He is our Protector. So let the believers put their trust in Allah.”

52. Say: “Are you waiting for anything to happen to us except one of two good things—victory or martyrdom? But we are waiting for Allah to punish you—either directly from Him or through us. So wait! We too are waiting.”

53. Say: “Whether you give charity willingly or unwillingly, it will not be accepted from you. You are a rebellious people.”

54. The only reason their charity is not accepted is that they disbelieve in Allah and His Messenger, they come to prayer lazily, and they give charity unwillingly.

55. So don’t be impressed by their wealth or children. Allah only wants to punish them through these things in this world—and their souls will leave while they are still disbelievers.

56. They swear by Allah that they are part of you, but they are not. They are only afraid.

57. If they could find a place to run to—caves, holes, or hiding places—they would rush toward it.

58. Some among them criticize you (O Prophet) about the distribution of charity. If they are given something, they’re pleased; but if not, they become angry.

59. If they were only content with what Allah and His Messenger gave them and said, “Allah is enough for us. Allah will give us more from His bounty, and so will His Messenger. To Allah alone we turn in hope.”

60. Charity (zakat) is only for the poor, the needy, those employed to collect it, those whose hearts are being brought closer to faith, to free captives, to help those in debt, for Allah’s cause, and for stranded travelers. This is a command from Allah. Allah is All-Knowing, All-Wise.

61. There are people among them who insult the Prophet and say, “He listens to everyone.” Say: “Yes, he listens for your good. He believes in Allah, trusts the believers, and is a mercy to those who believe.” But those who insult the Messenger of Allah will face a painful punishment.

62. They swear to you by Allah to please you. But it is more fitting that they should try to please Allah and His Messenger—if they are truly believers.

63. Don’t they know that anyone who opposes Allah and His Messenger will be in the Fire of Hell forever? That is the ultimate disgrace.

64. The hypocrites are afraid that a chapter of the Qur’an will be revealed exposing what is in their hearts. Say: “Go ahead and mock! Allah will expose exactly what you fear.”

65. If you ask them about their mockery, they’ll say, “We were only talking and joking.” Say: “Were you mocking Allah, His verses, and His Messenger?”

66. Don’t try to make excuses. You have disbelieved after you had believed. If We forgive some of you, We will punish others—because they were guilty.

67. The hypocrite men and women are alike. They tell others to do wrong, they stop others from doing right, and they keep their hands from giving. They forget Allah, so He forgets them. The hypocrites are truly rebellious.

68. Allah has promised the hypocrite men and women and the disbelievers the fire of Hell, where they will stay forever. That is enough for them. Allah has rejected them. And they will suffer a lasting punishment.

69. You are just like those before you. They were stronger, had more wealth and children, and enjoyed their share of life. You enjoyed your share, just as they did. You’ve fallen into the same corruption. Their deeds are useless in this life and the next. They are the losers.

70. Have they not heard the stories of those who came before them—of the people of Noah, ʿĀd, Thamūd, the people of Abraham, the companions of Midian, and the towns that were destroyed? Their messengers came to them with clear signs, but they rejected them. Allah did not wrong them—they wronged themselves.

71. The believing men and women are allies of one another. They encourage what is right and forbid what is wrong. They perform the prayer, give zakat, obey Allah and His Messenger. Allah will show them mercy. Truly, Allah is Almighty and Wise.

72. Allah has promised believing men and women gardens beneath which rivers flow, where they will stay forever—beautiful homes in everlasting paradise. And Allah’s pleasure is the greatest reward. That is the ultimate success.

73. O Prophet! Strive hard against the disbelievers and the hypocrites, and be firm with them. Their final home is Hell—and what a terrible destination!

74. They swear by Allah that they said nothing wrong, but they had uttered disbelief after having accepted faith. They planned what they could not carry out, and they were only angry because Allah and His Messenger had enriched them from His bounty. If they repent, it will be better for them. But if they turn away, Allah will punish them with a painful punishment in this world and the Hereafter. They will have no one on earth to protect or help them.

75. Some among them made a promise to Allah: “If He gives us from His bounty, we will give in charity and be among the righteous.”

76. But when He gave them from His bounty, they became stingy with it, turned away, and broke their promise.

77. So He placed hypocrisy in their hearts—lasting until the day they meet Him—because they broke their promise to Allah and lied.

78. Don’t they know that Allah knows their secrets and whispers, and that Allah is the Knower of all unseen things?

79. Those who criticize the believers who give freely and those who give only what they can—mocking them—Allah mocks them in return, and for them is a painful punishment.

80. Whether you (O Prophet) ask forgiveness for them or not—even if you ask seventy times—Allah will not forgive them. That is because they rejected Allah and His Messenger. And Allah does not guide rebellious people.

81. Those who were left behind (the hypocrites) rejoiced at staying behind when the Messenger of Allah went out to fight. They disliked striving with their wealth and lives in Allah’s path. They said, “Don’t go out in the heat!” Say: The Fire of Hell is much hotter. If only they understood!

82. So let them laugh a little—they will cry a lot as a result of what they earned.

83. If Allah brings you back to them and they ask your permission to join you, say: You will never come out with me again. You will never fight an enemy with me. You were happy to stay behind the first time, so stay with those who remain behind.

84. And do not ever pray over any of them when they die, nor stand at their graves. They disbelieved in Allah and His Messenger and died as sinners.

85. Don’t let their wealth or children impress you. Allah wants to punish them through these in this life, and cause their souls to depart while they are still disbelievers.

86. When a chapter is revealed saying, “Believe in Allah and strive with His Messenger,” the rich among them ask to be excused and say, “Let us stay with those who remain behind.”

87. They chose to stay behind with the weak. Their hearts were sealed, so they do not understand.

88. But the Messenger and those who believed with him strove with their wealth and their lives. These are the ones who will have all that is good. They are the successful.

89. Allah has prepared for them gardens beneath which rivers flow. They will live there forever. That is the greatest success.

90.Some of the desert Arabs came with excuses to ask for exemption. Those who lied to Allah and His Messenger stayed behind. A painful punishment will strike the disbelievers among them.

91. There is no blame on the weak, the sick, or those who have nothing to give—if they are sincere to Allah and His Messenger. There is no reason to criticize those who do good. Allah is Forgiving, Merciful.

92. Nor is there any blame on those who came to you asking for a ride (to join the battle), and you said, “I have nothing to carry you on.” They turned away with eyes full of tears, saddened that they had nothing to give.

93. The blame is on those who ask to stay behind while they are wealthy. They are happy to be with those who remain behind. Allah has sealed their hearts, so they don’t understand.

94. When you return to them, they will give you excuses. Say: “Don’t make excuses—we will never believe you. Allah has already told us the truth about you. Allah and His Messenger will watch what you do, and you will be returned to the One who knows everything hidden and seen. He will tell you what you used to do.”

95. They will swear to you by Allah when you return to them so that you will let them be. So let them be—they are impure, and their destination is Hell—a punishment for what they earned.

96. They will swear to you so that you will be pleased with them. But even if you are pleased with them, Allah is not pleased with rebellious people.

97. The desert Arabs are the worst in disbelief and hypocrisy and least likely to know the laws revealed by Allah to His Messenger. But Allah is All-Knowing, Wise.

98. Among the desert Arabs are those who consider what they spend in Allah’s cause as a burden and wait for disasters to strike you. May evil fall upon them! Allah hears and knows all.

99. But among the desert Arabs are others who believe in Allah and the Last Day, and consider what they give as a means to get closer to Allah and earn the Prophet’s prayers. Yes, indeed—it will bring them closer. Allah will soon admit them to His mercy. Allah is Forgiving, Merciful.

100. The first ones to believe—the Emigrants (Muhājirūn) and the Helpers (Anṣār)—and those who followed them in goodness: Allah is pleased with them, and they are pleased with Him. He has prepared for them gardens with rivers flowing beneath, to stay there forever. That is the ultimate success.

101. Some of the desert Arabs around you are hypocrites, and so are some people of Medina. They’ve become skilled in hypocrisy—you don’t know them, but We know them. We will punish them twice, and then they will be brought to a terrible punishment.

102. There are others who have confessed their sins. They mixed righteous deeds with bad ones. It may be that Allah will turn to them in mercy. Truly, Allah is Forgiving, Merciful.

103. Take charity from their wealth to cleanse and purify them. And pray for them—your prayer brings comfort to them. Allah is All-Hearing, All-Knowing.

104. Don’t they know that Allah accepts repentance from His slaves and takes the charity they give, and that Allah is the One who accepts repentance, the Merciful?

105. Say: “Do as you will—Allah will see your actions, and so will His Messenger and the believers. Then you will be returned to the Knower of the unseen and seen, and He will tell you what you used to do.”

106. And there are others left uncertain by Allah’s will—He may punish them or He may forgive them. Allah is All-Knowing, All-Wise.

107. There are those who built a mosque to cause harm, spread disbelief, create division among the believers, and act as a base for those who had earlier opposed Allah and His Messenger. They swear their intention was only good—but Allah testifies that they are liars.

108. Never stand in that mosque. A mosque founded on devotion to Allah from the first day is more worthy for you to stand in. In it are people who love to be purified, and Allah loves those who purify themselves.

109. Is the one who built his foundation on fear of Allah and His good pleasure better—or the one who built his building on the edge of a crumbling cliff, which collapses with him into the Fire of Hell? Allah does not guide the wrongdoing people.

110. The building they built will continue to shake doubt in their hearts until their hearts are torn apart. Allah is All-Knowing, Wise.

111. Indeed, Allah has purchased from the believers their lives and their wealth in exchange for Paradise. They fight in Allah’s cause, so they kill and are killed. This is a true promise from Him in the Torah, the Gospel, and the Qur’an. And who is truer to his promise than Allah? So rejoice in the bargain you’ve made—that is the great success!

112. The believers are those who repent, worship, praise Allah, fast, bow, and prostrate themselves; who command good, forbid evil, and keep the limits set by Allah. Give glad tidings to such believers.

113. It is not fitting for the Prophet or the believers to ask forgiveness for the polytheists, even if they are close relatives, after it has become clear to them that they will be people of the Fire.

114. Abraham’s asking forgiveness for his father was only because of a promise he had made to him. But when it became clear that he was an enemy to Allah, Abraham broke away from him. Abraham was tender-hearted and patient.

115. Allah would not misguide a people after He had guided them—unless He first made clear to them what they should avoid. Surely Allah knows everything.

116. To Allah belongs the kingdom of the heavens and the earth. He gives life and causes death. Besides Allah, you have no protector and no helper.

117. Allah turned in mercy to the Prophet, the Emigrants (Muhājirūn), and the Helpers (Anṣār), who followed him in the hour of hardship—even after the hearts of some were about to waver. Then He turned to them in mercy. He is Compassionate and Merciful to them.

118. And to the three who were left behind—until the earth, vast as it is, felt tight to them, and their own souls became a burden, and they realized there is no refuge from Allah except in Him—then He turned to them in mercy so they could repent. Surely, Allah is the One who accepts repentance, the Merciful.

119. O you who believe! Be mindful of Allah and be with the truthful.

120. It is not right for the people of Medina or the desert Arabs around them to stay behind the Messenger of Allah or prefer their own comfort to his. Whatever hardship they suffer in Allah’s cause—thirst, tiredness, hunger, or any step that angers the disbelievers, or any harm they endure—it is all recorded for them as a righteous deed. Surely, Allah never wastes the reward of the good-doers.

121. Nothing do they spend—small or large—or cross any valley, without it being written down for them, so that Allah may reward them for the best of what they used to do.

122. It is not right for all the believers to go out to battle. A group from every community should stay behind to gain understanding in religion and warn their people when they return, so they may take heed.

123. O believers! Fight those disbelievers who are near you and let them find firmness in you. Know that Allah is with those who are mindful of Him.

124. Whenever a new chapter is revealed, some of them ask, “Whose faith has this increased?” As for the believers, it strengthens their faith, and they rejoice.

125. But for those with sickness in their hearts, it adds more filth to their filth, and they die while they are disbelievers.

126. Do they not see that they are tested once or twice every year? Yet they do not repent or reflect.

127. Whenever a chapter is revealed, they look at one another, saying, “Is anyone watching you?” Then they slip away. Allah has turned their hearts away because they are people who don’t understand.

128. There has certainly come to you a Messenger from among yourselves—grievous to him is your suffering, anxious for your well-being, and full of kindness and mercy for the believers.

129. But if they turn away, say: “Allah is enough for me. There is no god but Him. In Him I put my trust, and He is the Lord of the mighty throne.” 0 0 0

Comment

Surah At-Tawbah is one of the most powerful and serious chapters in the Qur’an. It speaks directly to the hearts of the believers and challenges them to reflect on their sincerity, courage, loyalty, and faith. It separates true commitment from empty words.

A Surah of Testing and Truth

This Surah was revealed during a time when the Muslim community had become strong, but with strength came new trials—wealth, fear, hesitation, and hypocrisy. At-Tawbah acts like a mirror, showing the true face of belief and false appearance of faith.

It does not soften its message. There is no “Bismillah” (In the name of God) at its start because it opens with a firm declaration of truth and disavowal. This is not because Allah is not Merciful, but because the chapter addresses matters of broken promises, betrayal, and deception, which require justice first.

Real Faith vs. Fake Faith

The Surah spends many verses talking about the hypocrites (munafiqun)—those who claimed to be Muslim but always made excuses when it came to obeying Allah and supporting the Prophet. These people had weak hearts. They loved their comfort more than truth. At-Tawbah exposes their lies, not to shame them, but to warn us: Faith without action is not real faith.

In contrast, the Surah praises those who gave everything, like the Muhajirun (migrants) and Ansar (helpers), and those who were poor but still eager to serve Allah. It reminds us that sincerity and effort matter more than status.

Hope Through Repentance

Despite its harsh warnings, the Surah is named At-Tawbah—The Repentance. This teaches us that no matter how serious a mistake is, the door of forgiveness is open if the repentance is real. Even those who fell behind in their duty were given a chance to return. Allah’s mercy is always greater than His anger for those who come back sincerely.

Lessons for Today

  • In today’s world, this Surah is a wake-up call:
  • Are we loyal to our values, or do we only claim faith with our lips?
  • Do we make excuses when it’s time to stand up for truth and justice?
  • Do we put our comfort above our commitment to God?
  • Do we repent when we fall short?

Surah At-Tawbah reminds us that Islam is not just about identity or tradition. It is about real sacrifice, real sincerity, and real action.

Surah At-Tawbah teaches a hard but necessary lesson: Truth must be upheld, even when it is uncomfortable. Hypocrisy is more dangerous than open disbelief. And yet, the Surah ends with hope—a reminder that the Prophet is full of concern and mercy for us, and that Allah is always enough for those who trust in Him. 0 0 0

Charity cleanses, repentance brings peace,
From Allah’s mercy, blessings increase,
And faith is the armor that wins the fight.

Surah At-Tawbah ends with a call,
Repent and return, for Allah forgives all.
The doors of mercy remain open wide,
For those who are humble, free from pride,
His compassion embraces both great and small. 0 0 0
