Surah 64: At-Taghabun (The Mutual Loss and Gain): Text

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful

1. Whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth glorifies Allah. To Him belongs all sovereignty, and to Him belongs all praise, and He is over all things capable.

2. It is He who created you; then among you is the disbeliever and among you is the believer. And Allah sees well whatever you do.

3. He created the heavens and the earth in truth, and shaped you, and made your forms good; and to Him is the final return.

4. He knows whatever is in the heavens and the earth, and He knows what you conceal and what you reveal. And Allah is All-Knowing of what is in the hearts.

5. Has there not come to you the news of those who disbelieved before? So they tasted the evil consequence of their deeds, and for them is a painful punishment.

6. That was because their messengers came to them with clear proofs, but they said, “Shall humans guide us?” So they disbelieved and turned away, and Allah had no need of them. And Allah is Free of need, Worthy of all praise.

7. Those who disbelieve claim that they will never be resurrected. Say, “Yes, by my Lord, you will surely be resurrected, then you will surely be informed of what you did.” And that is easy for Allah.

8. So believe in Allah and His Messenger, and in the Light which We have sent down. And Allah is fully aware of what you do.

9. The Day He will gather you for the Day of Gathering – that will be the Day of Mutual Loss and Gain. Whoever believes in Allah and does good deeds – He will remove from him his misdeeds and will admit him into gardens beneath which rivers flow, to abide therein forever. That is the great success.

10. But those who disbelieve and deny Our signs – they will be the companions of the Fire, to abide therein forever. And what a miserable destination it is!

11. No disaster strikes except by Allah’s permission. And whoever believes in Allah – He guides his heart. And Allah is All-Knowing of everything.

12. So obey Allah and obey the Messenger. But if you turn away – then the duty of Our Messenger is only to convey clearly.

13. Allah – there is no god except Him. And upon Allah let the believers rely.

14. O you who believe, indeed, among your wives and your children are enemies to you, so beware of them. But if you pardon, overlook, and forgive – then indeed Allah is All-Forgiving, Most Merciful.

15. Your wealth and your children are but a trial, and with Allah is a great reward.

16. So be mindful of Allah as much as you can, listen and obey, and spend [in charity]; that is better for your own souls. And whoever is protected from the greed of his soul – it is they who will be successful.

17. If you lend Allah a goodly loan, He will multiply it for you and will forgive you. And Allah is Most Appreciative, Most Forbearing.

18. The Knower of the unseen and the seen, the Almighty, the All-Wise. 0 0 0

At-Taghabun: Comment

This Surah begins by declaring that everything in the heavens and the earth glorifies Allah, who owns all sovereignty, power, and praise. He created human beings, giving them the choice to believe or disbelieve, and shaped them in the best form. Nothing is hidden from His knowledge; He is aware of both what we show and what we conceal. The Surah warns by recalling the fate of past nations who rejected their messengers and suffered destruction, both in this world and in the Hereafter. Disbelievers deny resurrection, but Allah swears that it is certain and easy for Him; everyone will be told exactly what they did. The Day of Mutual Loss and Gain will clearly separate the winners—the believers who enter paradise—from the losers—the disbelievers condemned to hell. Misfortunes happen only with Allah’s permission, and those who believe find their hearts guided. True reliance should be on Allah alone, and obedience to Him and His Messenger is the path to safety. Even loved ones like spouses and children can become a test if they distract from faith, and wealth and children are also trials, not ultimate success. The way to true gain is to fear Allah as much as possible, obey His commands, spend in charity, and be free from greed. Allah promises to multiply any good given for His sake and to forgive, for He is appreciative, forbearing, and all-wise. 0 0 0
