Surah 92: Al-Layl (The Night)

Introduction

Surah Al-Layl is a short yet deeply meaningful chapter of the Quran revealed in Makkah. It is named after the “night” mentioned in its opening verse and draws a vivid contrast between darkness and light, generosity and miserliness, belief and denial, ease and hardship. The surah emphasizes that human efforts and destinies are different, and each person is walking a unique path. It highlights the moral principle that righteous actions and selflessness lead to ease, while greed and arrogance lead to hardship. The surah reminds that Allah owns both this world and the Hereafter, and He alone guides. Surah 92: Al-Layl (The Night): Text

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

(1) By the night as it covers –

(2) And by the day as it shines –

(3) And by He (Allah Himself) who created the male and the female –

(4) Indeed, your efforts are surely diverse –

(5) So as for the one who gives and fears Allah –

(6) And affirms the truth of the best reward –

(7) We will ease him towards ease –

(8) But as for the one who is stingy and considers himself free of need –

(9) And denies the best reward –

(10) We will ease him towards hardship –

(11) And his wealth will not benefit him when he falls [into ruin] –

(12) Surely, upon Us is guidance –

(13) And surely to Us belongs the Hereafter and the first life –

(14) So I have warned you of a blazing Fire –

(15) None will enter it except the most wretched –

(16) Who denied and turned away –

(17) But the righteous will be kept far from it –

(18) Who gives from his wealth to purify himself –

(19) And not as a favor to be repaid –

(20) But only seeking the Face of his Lord, the Most High –

(21) And he will surely be satisfied. 0 0 0

Al-Layl: Comment

Surah Al-Layl carries a timeless message about the choices we make and the consequences they bring. By swearing oaths on natural phenomena like night and day, Allah reminds us that just as these cycles are opposite yet complete the natural order, human choices also have opposing outcomes. The righteous path requires giving, fearing Allah, and believing in His promise, which paves the way to inner peace and ultimate success. On the other hand, selfishness and denial lead to a path of difficulty in this life and destruction in the next. The surah teaches that real purification comes from sincere giving solely for Allah’s pleasure, without expecting any repayment. This is a powerful reminder that our worth is not in what we keep but in what we give, and that true satisfaction is found only in the presence and approval of the Lord, the Most High. 0 0 0
